Don\u2019t take it for granted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you understand that power or that responsibility, then you can use that to improve your experience together.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By understanding the importance of your presence, you can help people out in ways you might never fully appreciate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does a patient really want to hear, you say?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are only a few critical messages you need to convey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You don\u2019t have to say these things directly, but you should be letting a patient know that you\u2019re there\u2026 for them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How you enter the room, how you greet them, how you look them in the eyes, and how you listen to them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patients in that heightened emotional state are sensitive to the verbal and non-verbal cues that you\u2019re putting out there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A simple thing like a little eye roll can entirely ruin the experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We know from a few studies that \u201cgood-doctor patient interactions affect patient satisfaction and good outcomes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It means that your attention and communication with others really impact the care that they receive. The nicer you are, the better your patients will do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You often think of a patient\u2019s disease as a physical ailment. You can try instituting this as an experiment and see if your interactions with people change for the better.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, you can work to try and convey the following messages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u201cI hear you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Patients need to feel like you\u2019re actually listening to what they\u2019re saying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not just the sensation of hearing their words. You need to give them the impression that you\u2019re really listening to what they have to say.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Patients are often waiting several hours for a few minutes with a doctor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They\u2019ve been rehearsing and re-rehearsing what they\u2019re going to say.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Give them a chance to say it, and let me know you\u2019ve heard it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look them in the eye. Listen, really listen, to what they\u2019re saying.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u201cI feel you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It must be hard to feel whatever it is you\u2019re feeling. It hurts. Let patients know that you really understand why they\u2019re seeing you today.<\/p>\n<p>This builds trust and confidence in your ability to care. When someone trusts you, they are more likely to follow your advice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u201cI want to help you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I really care that you\u2019re experiencing the distress that you are. You\u2019re not just another burden.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re a person, and you\u2019re not feeling well.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-5951\" src=\"https:\/\/medicalmanage.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/images_doct_and_patient_abebaiotita.jpg\" alt=\"If a person with end-stage disease gets some words of comfort or short-term pain-relief, for that moment, at least, are they not better? Do they not still feel some relief?\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medicalmanage.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/images_doct_and_patient_abebaiotita.jpg 623w, https:\/\/medicalmanage.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/images_doct_and_patient_abebaiotita-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medicalmanage.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/images_doct_and_patient_abebaiotita-585x376.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. \u201cI\u2019m going to try my best.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll do what I can, within my limitations, to help you.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll try and order the right tests and investigate your problems to the best of my ability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It means that I\u2019m going to let people know that I\u2019m trying to figure out their concerns.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But if you let patients know that you tried, they are often still satisfied with their visit and respect the limitations of what you can provide them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u201cI will make you better.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This one is perhaps a bit controversial. I mean, you can\u2019t make everyone better, and some things just aren\u2019t going to get better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But what does it mean to be better? If a person with low-risk chest pain is told that they aren\u2019t having a heart attack, but still feel the same symptoms, aren\u2019t they in some ways still better?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If a person with end-stage disease gets some words of comfort or short-term pain-relief, for that moment, at least, are they not better? Do they not still feel some relief?<\/p>\n<p><strong>In some instances, let\u2019s say a patient:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know it\u2019s bad now, but you\u2019re going to feel a lot better by the next time I see you.\u201d It doesn\u2019t always happen, but that degree of confidence can already cause a fair bit of relief.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When you\u2019re able to assure the right patients that they will, in fact, feel better, there is a letting go of some of the clinging that amplifies their pain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s using the placebo effect to the fullest. It\u2019s a real thing, remember. When someone believes that their pain is going to get better, they are much more likely to do so.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is a reminder to take full opportunity of the brief time you spend with patients. Remember the importance of your presence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t just make people better by giving them drugs and removing their organs.<\/p>\n<p>You sometimes help just by listening. By understanding. By caring.
