{"id":3885,"date":"2023-05-30T07:30:53","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T05:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicalmanage.gr\/who-uncovers-big-national-variations-in-antibiotics-consumption\/"},"modified":"2023-12-21T12:22:23","modified_gmt":"2023-12-21T10:22:23","slug":"who-uncovers-big-national-variations-in-antibiotics-consumption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicalmanage.gr\/en\/who-uncovers-big-national-variations-in-antibiotics-consumption\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO Uncovers Big National Variations in Antibiotics Consumption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Antibiotics are used far more in some countries than in others, a survey by the World Health Organization suggesting that urgent action was needed to slash unnecessary consumption of the medicines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cWHO Report on Surveillance of Antibiotic Consumption\u201d looked at antibiotic use in 65 countries and found the Netherlands used 9.78 defined daily doses (DDD) per 1,000 people, while Britain used twice as much and Turkey almost twice as much again, at 38.18 DDD per 1,000 inhabitants.<\/p><div id=\"medic-298676948\" class=\"medic-mesa-sto-article medic-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3269445924940809\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- medical en mesa sto arthro -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3269445924940809\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"8662865328\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p>Iran\u2019s consumption was similar to Turkey\u2019s, while Mongolia\u2019s was the highest of all among the countries surveyed, at 64.41 DDD per 1,000 people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Collecting the data is vital for tackling antimicrobial resistance, the extremely worrying trend of bacterial infections becoming immune to antibiotics, the report said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em> \u201cFindings from this report confirm the need to take urgent action, such as enforcing prescription-only policies, to reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics,\u201d<\/em> Suzanne Hill, director of the Department of Essential Medicines and Health Products at the WHO, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The lowest score was for Burundi, with just 4.44 DDD\/1,000 people, which the WHO said reflected limited data.<\/p>\n<p>A low score could also suggest that consumption is too low, leaving the population at risk of infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The survey also looked at which types of antibiotics were being used, and showed some countries &#8211; Italy, Spain and Japan &#8211; were relatively heavy users of the most precious drugs that the WHO says need to be kept in reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO introduced a classification system last year, saying penicillin-type drugs were recommended as the first line of defense, and that other drugs, on the \u201creserve\u201d list, were a last resort and only for use when absolutely necessary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Italy, 2.0 percent of daily antibiotics consumption was in the \u201creserve\u201d category, four times the rate in Germany and more than six times that of Britain, where only 0.3 percent of drugs were those earmarked for use in the last resort.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s overall consumption of antibiotics, at 14.19 DDD per 1,000 inhabitants, was about half that of South Korea, but 1.1 percent of Japanese consumption was in the \u201creserve\u201d category, far more than 0.2 percent in South Korea, the report showed.<\/p>\n<p>The United States, China and India, were not among the countries in the survey.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Source: REUTERS<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Antibiotics are used far more in some countries than in others, a survey by the World Health Organization suggesting that urgent action&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":3884,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[107],"tags":[],"ppma_author":[274],"class_list":["post-3885","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-patient-service"],"aioseo_notices":[],"aioseo_head":"\n\t\t<!-- All in One SEO 4.9.10 - aioseo.com -->\n\t<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Antibiotics are used far more in some countries than in others, a survey by the World Health Organization suggesting that urgent action was needed to slash unnecessary consumption of the medicines.
