Patients compare treatments, read guidelines, look up medication risks, and ask for explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And honestly? That\u2019s not wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should be questioned. You should expect dialogue. You should want patients to understand their care well enough to feel comfortable speaking up. Because you are human. You make mistakes. And medicine today is simply too complex and too fast-moving for any one person to know everything with absolute certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of viewing patient questions as challenges to your authority, you can choose to see them as opportunities to strengthen it through transparency, humility, and partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medicine is changing faster than any of you can keep up with<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One reason patient questions feel overwhelming is that healthcare is changing exponentially faster than it did even 15 years ago. New pharmaceuticals, new screening recommendations, new practice guidelines, new therapeutics, new technology. Add regional differences in standards of care, and you have a recipe for uncertainty on both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A patient who has moved from a city to a small town may walk in with expectations based on practices from their previous health system. A new physician moving after residency may discover that their training institution used entirely different first-line approaches from those used in their new region. Layered on top of that is the reality that many of you didn\u2019t receive updated training on newer therapies because they didn\u2019t exist at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients sense this complexity. Physicians feel it too. And both sides are simply trying to make the best decisions with limited time and limited information. This context matters. Without it, \u201cDr. Google moments\u201d feel like conflict. This isn\u2019t a failure. It\u2019s a signal. And it\u2019s also why you need new strategies to bridge the gap, not widen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A small, powerful approach: Give options, not dismissals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing that can transform interactions with patients is a simple shift: You no longer feel the pressure to have all the answers in the moment. Instead, you offer options and let the patient be part of the exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are considering a treatment plan, especially one with multiple reasonable pathways, you can say something like: \u201cHere are the top two or three options I\u2019m considering. I\u2019ll write them down so you can look them up. Take a look at the names, read through them, and think about what matters most to you. At your next visit, we\u2019ll decide together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach does three things at once:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It makes the patient part of the team:<\/strong> They are not passive recipients; they are collaborators.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It prevents the feeling of being rushed:<\/strong> They have time to learn, compare, process, and ask follow-up questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It strengthens the relationship, not the conflict:<\/strong> Patients feel respected and included, and the tug-of-war dynamic is avoided.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What usually happens next surprises many people: Patients call or message before you\u2019ve even signed the note, telling you which option they prefer or asking about a concern that leads you to adjust the plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahrq.gov\/sdm\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"That is true shared decision-making\">That is true shared decision-making<\/a><\/strong>. That is patient-centered care. But instead of viewing it as a threat, you can see it as a mirror reflecting an unmet need in healthcare: Patients want to understand their care and feel included in the decisions that affect their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can either resist that shift or lead it. You can use questions as opportunities. You can use uncertainty as an invitation to collaborate. You can use technology as a tool rather than a competitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because when physicians and patients work together\u2014openly, honestly, and humbly\u2014medicine becomes what it was always meant to be: a partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that partnership is how you deliver safer care, better outcomes, and more humane experiences for everyone
