I think it\u2019s best if you let me diagnose you, though\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example, there\u2019s no effort made to understand the patient\u2019s views or respect them as a partner in the treatment decision-making process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t say:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cYou need to calm down\u201d!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Telling an angry patient to calm down can have the opposite effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best approach is to give the patient time to calm down, show the patient you take them seriously, and acknowledge the source of the anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t say:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cDo you understand\u201d?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many patients will respond to this simple question with a yes regardless of whether they actually understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, ask: <em>\u201cI\u2019d like to make sure I\u2019ve explained things clearly, would you mind explaining in your own words what you understand of our discussion\u201d?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t say:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOh, don\u2019t worry about that. Most patients in your situation feel this way\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When physicians explain away patient distress as normal, it can prevent further patient disclosure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t say:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m running late today so let\u2019s get right to it\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Physicians are subjected to enormous time pressures, and patients understand this too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But patients who feel hurried may withhold crucial information necessary for clinical care and are more hesitant of asking questions because they don\u2019t want to waste the doctor\u2019s time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not appear rushed, even if you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t say:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anything too quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why not?<\/strong> One of the best ways to indicate that you are listening is silence so don\u2019t respond too quickly.
